Funny. I never thought of myself as a “punk”. But, maybe, because of my adoption and advocacy of social networking, I am.
Adam, a friend of mine posted a video essay on Facebook this morning that the wheels turning in my brain. The video compares today’s social media movement, to the punk rock movement in the 70s and 80s.
The video argues that punk music fought against the established norms of the music industry at the time. Punk fostered new forms of expression and ideas. It was messy at times, but the movement was strong. The end of the video essay is particularly thought provoking:
“Corporates could never like, listen to, or get punk. But will they listen to social media? Because its a bigger, more pervasive, more powerful, more mainstream movement than punk ever was.”
The video was created by some folks at Engage ORM, a company that makes money helping other companies manage their online social profiles.
